Rance D. Gregory, lovingly known as “Dan-o” by his many grandchildren, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 3, 2025, in Abilene, Texas. He was 89 years old.
Born on February 8, 1936, in Swenson, Texas, Rance lived a life marked by unwavering faith, deep love for family, and a strong commitment to his community. On July 2, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Lou Ann Spradling, beginning a marriage of 64 years filled with love, laughter, and devotion.
A lifelong member of the Church of Christ, Rance became a Christian at an early age and faithfully followed Jesus every day of his life. He was a long-time member of the Girard Church of Christ, where he served as both a deacon and an elder. He also worshiped with the Hedley Church of Christ in later years. Known for his deep love of singing, Rance led worship as a song leader for most of his life and often visited nursing homes to share hymns and encouragement. Even during his time in long-term care, he continued singing and leading hymns, ministering to others in word and song.
Rance was a joyful and social soul who never met a stranger. He found great delight in spending time with family and friends and was always eager to share his faith and the love of Christ.
He is survived by his daughter, Glenna Burrow of Abilene; his son, Jim Gregory and wife Jana of Brownfield; and daughter-in-law Sheila Gregory of Lubbock. He is also survived by two brothers: Garth Gregory and wife Alta Jean of Girard, and Ronnie Gregory of Elgin. Rance’s legacy continues through his nine grandchildren and their spouses, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lou Ann Gregory; his son, Joe Gregory; his parents, John and Irene Gregory; his brother Gary Gregory; and his sister Janice Long.
Rance farmed his entire life and was deeply connected to the land and to the agricultural community. In addition to his farming work, he served on various agricultural boards, was involved with the American Ag Movement, and supported countless young people through his longtime work with White River Youth Camp.
A graveside service will be held at Girard Cemetery on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to White River Youth Camp, a ministry close to his heart.
Though we mourn his passing, we rejoice in the hope of eternal life and are comforted knowing he is now in the presence of his Lord, having heard the words: "Well done, good and faithful servant.”
