Our beloved Lloyd Ray Young passed on December 26, 2025, at a local Abilene nursing home at the age of 79. He was born December 10, 1946, in Carlsbad, New Mexico to James Arthur and Jimmie Elizabeth Young. His plan was to follow in the family footsteps and work in the potash mines in the Carlsbad area because that was all he knew. But due to the urging of his high school guidance counselor who saw more than Lloyd could see in himself, she strongly encouraged him to attend college. He graduated from New Mexico State University (Aggies) with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in the late 1960’s. After college, he began working for West Texas Utilities (now American Electric Power (AEP) in Amarillo. He continued working for AEP with a move to Abilene and later transferred to Tulsa, Oklahoma until his retirement after 40 years in 2016. It was shortly after this that Lloyd moved back to Abilene. Lloyd attended Pioneer Drive Baptist Church, where he was involved in the singles group. He was an avid runner, and he ran at Redbud Park everyday. Trains were a fascination for Lloyd, and he loved all things trains.
Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents James and Jimmie Young, sister Juandene Robinson, brother Donnan Young, niece Brenda Kay Davis.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law Glenna Young. Additionally, he is survived by one nephew, Jimmy Preston Davis, and his wife Beverley and niece, Angela Young, and her husband Jimmie Dobbins. Lloyd has many additional generations of nieces and nephews.
In addition, he is survived by his long-time friend, Roxanne Light, who cared for his needs since his return to Abilene.
We would like to acknowledge and thank the nurses and staff at Windcrest and Wysteria Place for their excellent care of Lloyd, as well as the nurses with Hospice of the Big Country.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Lloyd Young to West Texas Rehab Hospice of the Big Country (4601 Hartford St, Abilene, TX 79605) or any Alzheimer’s Association.
Services will be held at Unity Spiritual Living Center, 2842 Barrow St., Abilene, TX 79605 at 2 PM on January 31, 2026. Lloyd’s cremains will be buried in Elmwood Memorial Park prior to the service.
