Kathryn George was born January 17, 1940 to James and Lillian Steele Matthews in Marlow, Oklahoma. She was the twelfth of thirteen children. She passed from this life on July 17, 2025.
Kathryn graduated from Marlow High School in 1958 and enrolled in Abilene Christian College four months later as a vocal music major. She played flute in the band and, possessing an extraordinary lyric soprano voice, performed in a choral group at the school.
She became acquainted with fellow band member Ed George and after dating several months they were married September 5, 1960. The wedding party (officiant, best man and maid of honor) consisted of Abilene Christian band members.
They had three children, Melinda Hancock, Glenna Miranda and Gregory George.
Kathryn was zealous about quilting; she quilted many baby quilts and donated them to different organizations. Every year for many years she made a quilt for Sam’s Place, an orphanage for deaf children in Kenya, Africa. She loved music, gardening, cooking and enjoyed watching birds visit the feeders outside her window. She was passionate about sending cards to her ill friends and the people in her church family. Her wonderful smile cheered everyone that met her.
Other than her husband Ed and their three children she is survived by grandchildren: Zachary George, Kaelan George, Joey George, Anjelica Gallardo, Nathan Wilson, Andrew Wilson, Lydia Taylor, Philip Miranda, Andrew Fortugno andChristina Fortugno siblings: Juanita Clark and Shirley Parsley and several great-grandchildren. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents: James and Lillian Steele Matthews siblings: Kathleen, George, Edna, Billy Gene, Harry, Mary Helen, Leslie, John, Glenna Mae, and Glen.
