Jean Pogue Stewart passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 86, with her middle son, Jay, by her side.
Jean was born in Dallas, Texas, on December 30, 1938, to Margaret and Guy Pogue. She graduated from Sunset High School in the Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas in 1956. In 1958, a friend at Abilene Christian College, set Jean up on a blind date where she met the love of her life Jack. They saw the King and I at the Texas State Fair. After two years of dating, they married on January 23, 1960, and shared 63 beautiful years together.
Jean returned to college and proudly earned her degree in Education in 1962, while beginning her journey as a wife and soon after, a mother. In 1961, she and Jack faced the uncertainty of the Cuban Missile Crisis when Jack was called up with the Texas National Guard and stationed at Fort Polk in Louisiana. They navigated those early years with courage and faith.
In 1970, the family moved to San Antonio, where Jean's passion for teaching and nurturing children blossomed. She helped start a preschool at MacArthur Park Church of Christ, which later became Christian Heritage School in 1977. Jean wore many hats there as a teacher, principal, and mentor, and was honored more than once with the "Extra Mile" award - a reflection of the dedication everyone saw in her daily life. At church, she shared her love of scripture as a Bible class teacher and supported Jack in his role and responsibilities as a church elder.
In 1992, Jean and Jack moved back to Abilene, Texas, where they both worked at Abilene Christian University. Jean tutored students in English, and she loved offering not just lessons, but kindness, encouragement, friendship and guidance to students who sometimes were learning English as a second language. After retirement she stayed busy teaching Ladies' Bible Class, hosting Care groups, and singing at Hillcrest Church of Christ. She also volunteered with Women for ACU and always found joy in gathering with friends old and new.
In 2021 Jean and Jack moved to Denton to be closer to family, and where Jean continued her hobbies, devotion to scripture and fellowship - creating new friends in short order in their new neighborhood. After Jack's passing in 2023, Jean moved back to San Antonio where she spent her remaining time in the city where her and Jack put down roots, raised a family and spent so much of their life together.
Family was the heart of Jean's life. She loved singing hymns, scrapbooking precious memories, cooking family recipes, and spending time with her grandchildren, who knew her fondly as Nana. Her collection of ladybugs - which began with nickname for her granddaughter Clarke - became a symbol of her playful spirit and love that grew over 28 years.
Jean and Jack also found peace and joy in the mountains, especially at their cabin in Angel Fire, New Mexico, where family and friends gathered for laughter, stories, and quiet moments surrounded by nature.
Jean is survived by her three children - Jeff, Jay, and Jill - and seven grandchildren: Joshua Stewart, Jackson Stewart, Clarke Bartholomew, Grant Dowdy, Jamie Barber, Meghan Tapia and Morgan O'Connell. She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Grace and Evelyn O'Connell, Elliot and Era Stewart, and Willow Tapia.
She was preceded in death by her beloved Jack, whose love and partnership filled her life for over six decades.
Jean will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, Nana, great-grandmother, and friend. She touched countless lives with her warmth, faith, and generous spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to FaithWorks of Abilene or to a charity dear to your heart - a fitting tribute to a life spent giving to others.
