James L. Reed

James L. Reed, 81, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, in Abilene, Texas. Born June 6, 1943, in Swenson, Texas, James lived a life marked by faith, devotion to family, and a steadfast work ethic.

A proud graduate of Jayton High School, James went on to serve his country with honor in the United States Army. He was stationed in Alaska for two years, an experience that shaped his sense of duty and resilience. After completing his military service at Ft. Sill Oklahoma, James returned to civilian life and embarked on a long career as a route salesman. His dedication and reliability led him to eventually retire from Frito-Lay.

On October 8, 1963, James married his high school sweetheart, Ruby Juanita “Nita” Tyler. Their marriage spanned 49 years until Nita’s passing and was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Later in life, he was blessed to find companionship again with his sweet second wife, Aline Love.

James was deeply rooted in his faith. For over four decades, he attended and helped lead worship at North Park Assembly of God Church in Abilene. He regularly sang tenor or bass alongside his wife, Nita, Pastor Sam Earp, and several other friends and family members and often enjoyed playing his bass guitar during services. His musical contributions were an extension of his spiritual devotion and brought comfort and inspiration to many.

Throughout his life, James embraced both competition and camaraderie through sports. In earlier years he enjoyed golf and participated in a bowling league. He also played volleyball and softball with family members and church friends—activities that reflected his love for fellowship and fun. Later introduced to disc golf by his son-in-law, James took quickly to the sport. He not only competed in tournaments but often outplayed younger participants with skill and good humor.

James will be lovingly remembered by his son Chris Reed and wife Deanna; daughters Sherri Martinez and husband Randy, Terri English and husband Tim, Lori Kister and husband Timothy; twelve grandchildren: Tabitha and Jordan Reed; Kirsten, Tiffany, Jeremy, Emily, and Katelyn Martinez; TJ and wife Lydia, Tyler and wife Paige, Taliah English and husband Noah Crisp; Keely and Logan Kister, six great-grandchildren: Samuel, Charlotte, Thomas, Nathan, and twins, Josiah and Casey English and by his youngest sister Jane Van Houten and her husband Charles. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were touched by his kindness.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nita; second wife Aline; parents James W. Reed and Juanita (Peña) Reed; and sisters Yvonne Stanley and Joann & husband Roy Trevino.
