David Alvin Polnick was born on August 21, 1950, to Alvin and Erna Polnick in Abilene, Texas, and entered his heavenly home on February 11, 2026. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at First Central Presbyterian Church at 4:00 pm with Dr. Cliff Stewart officiating under the direction of Piersall Funeral Directors. A reception will follow from 5:00pm until 6:30pm.
David was confirmed in the Lutheran Church on March 22, 1964. He married Mary Ann Meimerstorf on August 11, 1973. Mary Ann was the love of his life and her passing in 2012 left a void in his heart. He was blessed to marry Alynn Cain on July 26, 2013. She was an answered prayer and is a true angel to David and the Polnick family. They were fortunate to have 12 amazing years together after both being widowed.
A native Abilenian, Dr. Polnick earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Concordia College in Seward, Nebraska, his Master of Education degree from Abilene Christian University, and his Doctor of Education from Texas Tech University.
David had a passion for his Lord, family, education, and the outdoors. He was a life time educator, beginning his career in a Lutheran Parochial School. Then he and Mary Ann moved to Abilene, Texas where he began a long career with the Abilene Independent School District first teaching in elementary then moving to administration as a principal, Deputy Superintendent for Business and Finance until March 2001 when he served Lubbock ISD as Chief Financial Officer. In January 2003, Dr. Polnick was the sole candidate interviewed by the Board of Trustees to lead Abilene ISD as the next Superintendent. He served as superintendent for seven years until his retirement in 2010 in order to be able to spend time with his wife and family.
Over his 32 years with AISD Dr. Polnick served on multiple community boards and received numerous recognitions. He was most proud when on June 14, 2006, when he became the first school superintendent in the United States of America to receive the Air Force Scroll of Appreciation on behalf of Dyess Air Force Base.
His 38-year marriage to Mary Ann was blessed with two children, Benjie and his wife Kimberly of Waco, Texas, who have three boys, Creighton, Griffin, and Harrison and Julie and her husband Casey Wilson of Abilene, Texas, who have four children, Hayden, Tanner, Mary Collins, and June. In 2013 his family expanded when marrying Alynn and he gained two children, Chad Cain and his wife Meredith of Plainview, Texas, who have three children Abby, Sophie, and Liam and Cary and her husband Jeff Taylor of North Richland Hills, Texas, who have three children Clark, Callie and Caroline. David’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family and in the outdoors with his grandsons and granddaughters. As well as watching them compete in various sporting events.
David was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Ann, along with his parents Alvin and Erna Polnick, his in-laws Erwin and Jean Meimerstorf, and brother-in-law James Meimerstorf. He is survived by his wife Alynn and all of their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers James Polnick and his wife Janice, Leroy Polnick and his wife Alice, and two sisters, Helen and her husband Mike and Dorothy and her husband Mike, his sister-in-law Carol Meimerstorf, his brother-in-law Mickey Meimerstorf and his wife Pam and a large extended family as well as many friends.
The family would like to thank Visiting Angels, Hendrick Hospital Medical Staff and Hendrick Hospice for their professional and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers the Polnick family respectfully requests donations be made toward the Community Foundation for the Abilene Education Foundation, Star Grants. You can donate here https://cfa.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=4096
