Billy Joe Gravens

Joe was born and raised in Abilene, TX. He would carry on his father's livestock hauling business, G&G Livestock Haulers where trucks loaded with cattle would move cattle across the entire country. He retired the company in 1991. He and his wife Elena would then spend the next fifteen years travelling across the US, Canada and Mexico as members of both the Good Sams and Roadrunners RV clubs. They would eventually end up spending summers in Ruidoso, New Mexico. It was there that they spent many a weekend at Ruidoso Downs enjoying the horse races. Joe spent many days fishing off his pier on lake Ft Phantom and the Gulf of Mexico. He loved the outdoors and felt very blessed to be able to spend much of his time there.

He was also a very dedicated supporter of the West Texas Rehab.

Billy Joe Gravens, a beloved resident of Abilene, Texas, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on September 4, 2026. Born on November 21, 1929, to John Henry and Savannah Frances Gravens, Joe lived a life marked by hard work, dedication, and the love of family.

A proud business owner in the livestock transport industry, Billy Joe built a legacy through his entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering commitment to his customers. His work was not just a job; it was a testament to his values and an embodiment of the resilience that defined his generation. He retired the company in 1991.

Joe's life revolved around his family, particularly his beloved wife, Elena, and their cherished children and grandchildren. His memory will continue to thrive in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of his gentle nature, his laughter, and his ability to find joy in the simple things. Joe had a dry wit about him and he couldn't go anywhere in town without being known. He never met a stranger. Joe touched the lives of many, embodying the spirit of community that makes Abilene so special.

Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years Elena, his adopted daughter Melinda Madison and her husband Doug, his step daughter Elaine Stirling and her husband Adam, his sister Lucille Herman. Joe is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents John and Frances Gravens, brother John Gravens, sister Mary Frances Pentecost and his step daughters Syliva Stock and Patricia Mendez.

Joe will be remembered for his strength, compassion, and the lasting impact he had on everyone who knew him. May he rest in peace.
