Asunción Cruz, beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, was called home to be with the Lord on March 3, 2026. Funeral mass will be on Monday, March 9, 2026 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 826 Cottonwood, at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow across the street at the Abilene City Cemetery. A visitation and rosary service will be on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the chapel of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut Street.

She was born on August 15, 1942, in San José Guelatova, Zimatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico, to Maria Cortez and Aurelio Cruz.

Asunción lived a life defined by strength, faith, and devotion to her family. Though she never had the opportunity to learn how to read or write, she possessed a wisdom and resilience that guided her through life. She worked tirelessly and sacrificed endlessly to provide for and care for her children and loved ones.

She was a woman who lived fearlessly, yet carried a deep and reverent fear of the Lord. Her faith, courage, and unconditional love shaped the lives of those around her. She led by example—through hard work, humility, and unwavering dedication to her family.

Asunción’s greatest pride and joy were her children and the generations that followed. Her legacy of love continues through her family.

She is survived by her children: Paula Carreño, Aaron Carreño, Victor Carreño, Ana Maria Barrera, Patricia Carreño, Aurora Carreño Cruz, and Lazaro Carreño. She also leaves behind 22 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren who will carry her memory forward.

Though she will be deeply missed, her life, faith, and the love she poured into her family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Asunción Cruz, querida madre, abuela y matriarca, fue llamada a la presencia del Señor el 3 de marzo de 2026. Nació el 15 de agosto de 1942 en San José Guelatova, Zimatlán, Oaxaca, México, hija de María Cortez y Aurelio Cruz.

Asunción vivió una vida marcada por la fortaleza, la fe y una profunda dedicación a su familia. Aunque nunca tuvo la oportunidad de aprender a leer o escribir, poseía una gran sabiduría y una enorme capacidad de sacrificio. Hizo todo lo que estuvo a su alcance para cuidar y proveer para su familia y sus hijos.
