Nettie Lee Hay, 92 of Abilene, passed away at her home on Thursday, October 22, 2015. Graveside services were held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 27th in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Piersall Funeral Directors, 733 Butternut St. On Saturday, October 31st, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church Chapel with a time of visitation to follow.
Nettie was born to Garland Teaff and Lou Della King Teaff on March 5, 1923 in the Crossroads Community near Tye, Texas. She lived and worked in Ft. Worth for 3 years during WWII, but most of her life was spent in the Abilene area.
Nettie attended Crossroad Community’s one room schoolhouse and graduated from Merkel High School at 16. She studied bookkeeping at Draughn’s Business College and after returning from Ft. Worth, she worked for W.S. Wagley at Wagley Real Estate. She married Robert Dean Hay February 16, 1947.
During her 55 year marriage to Bob, Nettie was a devoted wife and mother. She also worked as a secretary at both Belmont Baptist Church and Coca Cola Bottling Co. Before retiring she and her husband served as Church Hostess and Host at First Baptist Church of Abilene.
Nettie was a strong Christian woman who constantly volunteered to help use her talents to serve others. She was an active member at Belmont Baptist and later at First Baptist. She was a talented seamstress, cook, writer, artist and musician. A couple of generations of children at Belmont Baptist Church will remember her playing their Sunday School songs on both the piano and the accordion.
Surviving Nettie are her daughters Betty Sims and husband Chuck of Abilene and Suzy Hay and husband Brad Bellamy of Beacon, NY, a brother Glenn Teaff and wife Lonelle of Merkel, a close friend and caregiver Valerie Nunez as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters Louceil, Loneita and Grace and one great-nephew Keith Beasley.
